Hermann Mannes was born in 1891 in Vegesack and came from a merchant family. His father Marcus Mannes worked as a merchant in Bernburg an der Saale. Hermann himself became a merchant for raw materials and seemed to be a soldier in the first world war. In 1930 he moved from Bernburg to Magdeburg with his family and lived near Breiter Weg, a good neighborhood.
From 1933 on, the persecution of Jewish families began. Hermann’s name was published on a list of Magdeburger Jews, to prevent making business with Jews. From 1938 on, his daughter Lieselotte could no longer attend public school, as it was also forbidden for Jews. In the years 1933 to 1939 several family members died. Agathe Freiberg, his cousin, emigrated to Australia. After his mothers death and the arrival of his grandmother Laura Cohn in Magdeburg in 1939, Hermann didn’t seem to emigrate. The reasons for this are unknown.
Soon the second world war began. First, Hermann and his relatives were able to remain in ther apartments and did’nt have to move to the „Jewhouse“. In April 1942 the family Mannes and Laura Cohn were deported to Warsaw Ghetto with the first major transport from Magdeburg. Later they were taken to Treblinka, where they were murdered.
